The Sunbury Services Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, Oct. 7, to consider initial contracts and financial allocations for the widening of East Granville Street, a key segment of State Route 37 running through the municipality. According to the committee's meeting agenda, members will review first readings on an engineering design contract and a third-party property appraisal contract for the corridor expansion.

Beyond the initial agreements, the committee will deliberate on how to split local municipal capital funds between the East Granville Street widening and the city's 2027 general street resurfacing program. The funding breakdown comes ahead of a Nov. 6 deadline to submit grant applications to the Ohio Public Works Commission, which provides state infrastructure assistance to help local governments finance capital roadway projects. Choosing how much municipal capital to commit to the corridor directly affects the funding available for routine paving and maintenance across Sunbury's neighborhood streets.

The East Granville Street widening is being planned in partnership between the City of Sunbury and the Ohio Department of Transportation, according to the municipal project description. The project spans from just west of Morning Street to east of Letts Avenue. Plans call for reconstructing the roadway with two lanes, adding sidewalks or a shared-use path to enhance pedestrian accessibility, and constructing a new pedestrian bridge connecting to the Ohio & Erie Trail. Construction is scheduled to commence in summer 2027.

The proposed third-party appraisal agreement prepares the city for property acquisitions needed along the corridor. Widening the road footprint and constructing continuous pedestrian infrastructure between Morning Street and Letts Avenue will require Sunbury to secure permanent easements or purchase right-of-way parcels from abutting property owners. Independent appraisals establish certified fair market valuations before formal acquisition negotiations can proceed. The committee will hold its discussion during its regular 6:30 p.m. session at Sunbury Town Hall.
