Columbus State YMCA Application Listed as Waiting for Materials

Municipal records list the Long Street proposal as Waiting for Materials following commission review.

The Columbus Downtown Commission has deferred final action on a proposal by Columbus State Community College and Moody Nolan to construct a 53,000-square-foot YMCA and childcare center at East Long Street and North Washington Avenue.

The Columbus Downtown Commission was scheduled to hold a formal review hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, at 111 N. Front St. for Columbus State Community College and Moody Nolan's Certificate of Appropriateness application for the Columbus State YMCA. Municipal development records list the Certificate of Appropriateness application status as "Waiting for Materials". The administrative designation defers final action on the proposal, indicating that commissioners reviewed the design but required additional architectural details, site materials, or design clarifications before granting Certificate of Appropriateness approval.

The planned two-story facility will occupy what is currently a surface parking lot on the college campus. According to municipal permit filings, the project includes an aquatic center with a swimming pool, a gymnasium, fitness and exercise spaces, academic classrooms, and childcare spaces including an exterior playground. Located at the northwest corner of Long Street and Washington Avenue, the facility will have capacity to serve as many as 500 children alongside fitness areas and space for college sports exercise programming.

Commissioners have examined the building's exterior envelope and facade treatment. For commission preliminary submission, Moody Nolan submitted drawings illustrating typical vertical panel patterns and metal panel profile finishes for the Columbus State YMCA. The applicant team also submitted material specifications outlining modular brick and composite assemblies for review.
