Monsignor John G. Johnson, a priest at Saint Agatha Church in Upper Arlington, died on the night of Wednesday, Sept. 30, from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while out on a walk, according to Upper Arlington police. He was 77 years old.
The collision occurred on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the intersection of Tremont and Ridgecliff roads. According to police reports, the crash involved one vehicle and a pedestrian, identified as Johnson. The parish stated that Johnson was walking when the crash took place. First responders transported him in critical condition to a local hospital, where he died the following evening.
Upper Arlington police Sgt. Bryan McKean said the crash remains under active investigation. McKean stated that investigators could not say if the driver of the vehicle would face charges. Upper Arlington police are requesting assistance from the public and have urged anyone who has information about the crash to call the department at 614-459-2800.
The Saint Agatha congregation mourned the loss of the longtime clergyman. Johnson "was a source of spiritual guidance, and inspiration to countless parishioners throughout his years of priesthood, especially those here at St. Agatha," the church said in posts on Facebook and Instagram.
Memorial arrangements are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, at Saint Agatha Church, 1860 Northam Road in Upper Arlington. The parish announced that visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Following the morning visitation, Bishop Earl K. Fernandes of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus will celebrate the Funeral Mass and the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10 a.m.
