Franklin County Voters Face 7:30 p.m. Deadline for 12,199 Mail Ballots

Outstanding absentee ballots must reach election officials by poll close as 54,645 voters navigate precinct changes.

The Franklin County Board of Elections reported 82,928 requested mail-in ballots, with 70,729 returned as of Sunday. That leaves 12,199 unreturned ballots by newsroom arithmetic. NBC4 reported more than 12,000 Franklin County mailed ballots have not yet been received by the board of elections. Under Ohio law, absentee mail ballots must be received by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. Voters who still have mail-in ballots should not place them in the mail and should instead return their ballot to the Franklin County Board of Elections using the drive-up ballot drop-off tent without leaving their vehicle.

The Franklin County Board of Elections announced that its Morse Road location will not serve as an Election Day polling location on Tuesday. Election Day polling locations will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and voters who are standing in line by 7:30 p.m. will be allowed to vote. In October, polling location change notifications were sent to 54,645 registered voters whose assigned polling location was changed for the Nov. 3 election. Officials say the reasons for relocating polling places vary, including storm damage at the Barack Recreation Center and other scheduling issues.

"We're going to notify those 54,000 voters! We're going to send them a postcard in the mail," said Antone White, director of the Franklin County Board of Elections. Highlighting strong participation, White added, "We're voting over 3,000 people a day! Voters are coming out, and you have competitive state races! And we haven't seen that in Ohio in quite some time."

Voters who requested an absentee ballot, but later chose to vote at their assigned polling location on Election Day will be required to cast a provisional ballot to ensure only one ballot is counted for each voter. The form of identification must include the voter's name and photo, and it must not be past the ID's expiration date.

Across Ohio, 1,730,111 registered voters cast early ballots out of 8,956,209 registered voters in this November's election, according to the Statehouse News Bureau. In a call with press on Tuesday morning, an election coalition said there were no “significant disruptions” being reported at polling locations. The Franklin County Board of Elections issued pre-election reminders for voters to check polling locations and return absentee mail ballots.

Previously, Pique Media reported that Franklin County concludes early voting as board says Morse Road location will not serve as polling site Tuesday.
