Pique Media expanded its mobile publishing platform across central Ohio on Friday, Oct. 30, transforming its news experience from an individual reading and viewing feed into an interactive civic space. According to App Store release notes, version 1.3.0 adds new community discussion functionality across videos, articles, and the map, user profile pages, and tools to send tips to our newsroom. The software update is designed to connect Columbus residents directly with neighborhood reporting, municipal planning, and civic conversations taking place throughout the region.

Since launching in September, the platform provided local accountability journalism, video explainers, and interactive parcel data. With the release of version 1.3.0, readers no longer consume reporting in isolation. Instead, the update builds a shared public square directly on top of everyday local news, allowing residents from the Near East Side to Victorian Village to contribute on-the-ground context, share primary documents, and collaborate directly with Pique's reporting desk.

Unified civic conversations across formats

The core architecture of the update centers on bringing community discussion to every piece of journalism Pique produces. Rather than confining reader reactions to the bottom of traditional articles or siloing comments behind standalone message boards, the app introduces unified, flat conversation ribbons across all published formats. Whether central Ohioans are reading an in-depth investigation, watching a short-form video explainer, navigating an interactive election chart, or checking planning records for a neighborhood parcel, they join the same continuous conversation.

Direct, 30-second newsroom tips

A second central pillar of the release is a streamlined, private newsroom tip system engineered for fast reporting on breaking civic developments. Central Ohio readers can initiate a tip anywhere within the app in roughly 30 seconds. In addition to dedicated tip buttons on stories, navigation bars, and civic parcel cards, users can simply long-press anywhere on the Columbus map to drop a pin and start a submission tied to an exact physical location.

The intake flow allows readers to upload up to 10 photos or high-resolution videos, providing visual evidence of traffic safety issues, zoning notices, or municipal service disruptions. Once submitted, tips are routed straight to Pique reporters and editors for immediate editorial triage rather than languishing in an unmonitored general inbox. Internal records show the newsroom intake queue logs submissions with neighborhood markers and private tracking stages as reports arrive from across the city. Readers retain complete visibility over their confidential submissions through a private tracking tab inside their profile, where they can monitor four clear stages: sent, in progress, included in a published story, or not pursued.

Reader profiles, civic badges and live alerts

To foster long-term accountability and civil discourse across Columbus, version 1.3.0 introduces personalized reader profile pages. Profiles highlight each user's civic participation across the platform, including their published comments, Helpful marks earned from fellow residents, and community badges that reflect constructive engagement on regional issues. By celebrating consistent, thoughtful contributions, the platform encourages constructive public dialogue rather than anonymous noise.

These community tools are backed by an integrated notification center. Readers can opt into instant push notifications and in-app alerts that notify them when another user quotes their comment, when neighbors mark their perspective as Helpful, or when Pique reporters advance an investigation based on a submitted tip. The notifications provide direct shortcuts back to specific map pins or story threads, keeping residents informed as local issues evolve.

How Columbus readers can update or download

The updated mobile app is available immediately to central Ohio residents through Apple's App Store. For local mobile users, the download requires iOS 18.0 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 18.0 or later on iPad, with support also extended to Apple silicon Mac computers and Apple Vision devices.

Existing users who have enabled automatic app updates will receive version 1.3.0 automatically, while others can update manually by opening the App Store, selecting their account profile, and choosing update next to Pique Media. New readers can find the application by searching for Pique Media in the App Store search bar. Central Ohio readers can also visit Pique's website to scan a code or view the application on the App Store.
