Capital Line Construction Advances on Gay Street as Organizers Support Businesses

The two-mile Downtown Columbus pathway advances block by block while organizers offer parking and rewards for local businesses.

The Capital Line is an urban pathway woven through the heart of Downtown Columbus, planned as a two-mile journey exclusive to bike and pedestrian traffic connecting amenities, greenspaces, job centers, and residential neighborhoods dci-capitalline-overview.

On April 20, 2026, construction began along Gay Street between Front and Fourth streets. Crews eliminated on-street parking, removed medians, trees, and parking payment kiosks, and restricted traffic to a single eastbound lane guided by construction barrels.

Crews have installed underground infrastructure supporting the streetscape, transitioning into surface-level reconstruction. Pedestrian paver installation began at the corner of Front and Gay streets during the week of Oct. 5, 2026, marking the visible arrival of the new walkway design. Crews also carried out weekend construction at Gay and Third streets and along the Front-to-High block on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026.

Sequential Block-by-Block Rollout

Block-to-block reconstruction began on Gay Street between Front and High streets on Aug. 3, 2026, closing the block to vehicular traffic. Reconstruction of that first block is scheduled to wrap up on Dec. 16, 2026, reopening the roadway to traffic.

Work across the corridor is rolling out block by block eastward toward Fourth Street. Construction on the Gay Street phase of the Capital Line is scheduled to finish by the end of 2027, with blocks reopening as work is completed cw-project-end-2027. The entire four-block corridor reconstruction from Front to Fourth Street is scheduled for completion on Nov. 30, 2027.

Demolition began on North Pearl Street between Elm and Gay streets on Sept. 21, 2026, to install new brick sidewalks and regrade the alley, closing vehicular traffic through December. At major intersections along Gay Street, including High and Third streets, crews are rebuilding corners one by one in a clockwise sequence, with each corner taking about two weeks.

Merchant Disruption and Work Zone Access

A long construction project has been taking a toll on Downtown Columbus businesses, but a new program was designed to bring customers back nbc-business-toll.

Before any work begins adjacent to buildings, businesses with outdoor patios will need to temporarily close and clear those spaces dci-patio-closures. Messer will also remove and safely store patio fencing, reinstalling after the block-to-block construction is complete dci-messer-patio.

Sidewalk preparation work extends six to 10 feet from building facades to allow crews to complete new concrete walks before roadway reconstruction begins. Pedestrian access to storefront doorways is maintained throughout construction with protective fences, temporary ramps, and bridges. Temporary loading zones will be available for deliveries, customer pickup and drop-off, rideshare services and quick stops dci-loading-zones.

Business Relief and Incentive Programs

To help offset the loss of on-street parking and support continued access to Gay Street businesses, the City is helping provide convenient, affordable parking for customers during construction at the Fourth and Elm garage (78 N. Fourth Street) dci-parking-garage. The arrangement provides garage parking for $1 per hour for up to three hours with a validation from a participating Gay Street merchant.

To maintain open communication, Downtown Columbus Inc. began hosting weekly Friday morning office hours for Gay Street merchants at Brioso Coffee at 53 N. High Street on July 17, 2026, allowing business owners to address construction, delivery, and access issues face-to-face.

Experience Columbus and Downtown Columbus Inc. launched the Downtown Discovery Pass featuring 20 restaurants, bars, galleries, shops and experiences in the Gay Street District cw-discovery-pass. The year-long mobile rewards incentive program is scheduled to conclude Sept. 30, 2027.

“Small, local businesses are at the heart of Downtown, and supporting them is especially important as we move through the construction phase of the Capital Line,” President of Downtown Columbus Inc., Amy Taylor said in a release cw-amy-taylor-quote.

To draw seasonal foot traffic, Downtown Columbus Inc. is scheduled to host Yuletide on Gay on Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, a free holiday event featuring ice sculptures, live music, and a Wander Nights trolley stop.
