The BST&G Fire Department was called just before 2 p.m. Sunday on reports of a basement collapse at 2 South Vernon Street. Upon arrival, fire officials discovered that a section of the basement had failed along East Cherry Street, dropping block, brick and soil into the basement and exposing a section of the sidewalk. Emergency crews installed temporary shoring to stabilize the structure after discovering cracks in the exterior brick facade and first-floor interior walls, but new cracks formed and the north wall began leaning outward.
Officials closed East Cherry Street to through traffic after the commercial building at 2 South Vernon Street in Sunbury partially collapsed, and established a safety perimeter that restricts the area to local traffic. Officials said the building must undergo an evaluation by a forensic engineer before its future can be determined, while the cause of the collapse remains under investigation. Emergency officials asked the public to call 911 if they notice visible changes in the structure.
The foundation failure marks the second structural emergency on Sunbury Square in 2026, following the February collapse of the Atlas Insurance roof at 35 East Granville Street under heavy snow. Following that earlier collapse, Delaware County building compliance officials deemed the Atlas building unsafe for occupancy pending engineering reviews.
