The Columbus-based creamery partnered with an eastern Ohio agricultural cooperative and an Amish mill after international sourcing fell through.

Columbus-based Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams released a new limited-edition fall flavor, Appalachian Acorn Pie, on Oct. 1, 2026, concluding a five-year effort to develop an ice cream centered on foraged Ohio oak acorns release-debut. The company announced that the seasonal flavor is available while supplies last in its scoop shops nationwide and online through its website release-availability.

According to the company's Oct. 1 announcement, the project began roughly five years ago when its research and development team started exploring whether acorns could serve as an ice cream base release-start. Initial attempts to secure acorn flour from international suppliers fell through, prompting Jeni's to build an entirely new regional supply chain to gather and process wild acorns in eastern Ohio release-supply. Beth Stallings, senior director of innovation at Jeni's, said in the announcement that early samples showed acorn flour was fragrant and nutty, convincing the team to pursue the flavor despite a lack of commercial distribution channels for acorns release-quote.
