The Ohio Department of Transportation has scheduled a continuous 10-day full closure of the southbound Interstate 71 exit ramp to East Main Street in downtown Columbus. The I-71 southbound ramp to Main St. will close starting 7 p.m. Friday, October 16 through 5 a.m. Monday, October 26.

Alongside the ramp shutdown, state highway officials will restrict southbound freeway traffic through the downtown corridor over the coming weekend. I-71 southbound between Town St. and Main St. will be reduced to two lanes starting 7 p.m. Friday, October 16 through 5 a.m. Monday, October 19. All travel lanes on the mainline interstate are scheduled to reopen ahead of the Monday morning commute.

Downtown Travel and Commuter Impacts

The concurrent restrictions will create travel pinch points through the downtown Columbus highway trench, where southbound freeway traffic merges toward the junction with Interstate 70. The ramp shutdown closes all travel lanes across the entire 0.419-mile connector leading from southbound I-71 to East Main Street.

Motorists traveling south from northern Franklin County communities into the urban core will lose direct access to the East Main Street corridor. The exit serves as an entry point to Grant Medical Center, municipal and county government buildings, and the Discovery District. Commuters bound for downtown employers who routinely rely on East Main Street should anticipate rerouting. Drivers can exit earlier at Broad Street or continue south to alternate surface connections to reach their destinations.

At the same time, mainline drivers will experience a lane squeeze just north of the interchange. The mainline restriction covers a 0.238-mile segment where lane closures leave only two southbound travel lanes open through the weekend. While the mainline restriction lifts before sunrise on Monday, Oct. 19, the ramp closure will remain in place through the subsequent workweek, creating recurring delays during weekday morning and evening rush hours.

Feed Verification and Detour Caveats

ODOT’s machine-readable work zone traffic data feed does not publish designated detour routes for the ramp shutdown, leaving motorists to find alternate paths through the city street grid. Because state feed records omit official detour descriptions, drivers will need to rely on portable message boards positioned along the highway corridor for real-time guidance.

State records also reflect administrative caveats regarding the project timetable. The data feed indicates that the closure maintains an unverified start status, and completion dates are similarly marked unverified. While ODOT has scheduled the 7 p.m. Friday start and the Oct. 26 reopening target, unverified feed flags indicate that exact field deployment remains subject to weather conditions, contractor operations, and equipment staging.

Downtown Ramp Up Engineering Context

The localized work zone is part of the I-71/Main Street Interchange Improvements project, cataloged in state transportation records as PID 123987 and route identification FRA-71-17.22. Designed to upgrade the highway infrastructure, the project reconfigures and widens the existing southbound exit ramp to two lanes to handle higher traffic volumes and reduce queue spillback into the freeway trench.

The ramp overhaul ties directly into the state's multi-phase I-70/I-71 Downtown Ramp Up initiative. ODOT planning documents describe the program as a series of projects to reconstruct Interstates 70/71 in downtown Columbus and alleviate the biggest safety and congestion problems along the corridor. Phase 4R/6R work in the corridor also constructs a new flyover ramp from Mound Street to I-71 south to reduce weaving.
