Harrison Michael Barton Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Child Exploitation

The Texas man traveled to Ohio to meet a teenager he connected with online before being arrested at John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

Harrison Michael Barton, a 39-year-old repeat sex offender of North Detroit, Texas, was sentenced in federal court in Columbus on Thursday, Nov. 5, to 360 months (30 years) in prison for child exploitation crimes, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr. imposed the prison sentence following Barton’s guilty plea in February 2026 to charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted kidnapping of a minor, prosecutors said. Under the terms of his federal plea agreement, Barton faced a recommended prison sentence of 25 to 30 years.

According to federal prosecutors, Barton traveled to Ohio on a 31-hour Greyhound bus ride from Florida to Coshocton County in February 2025 after connecting with a 15-year-old victim online while playing the video game Call of Duty. Court documents show that Barton made the trip approximately one month after meeting the teenager online. The teenager picked up Barton in Newcomerstown, where Barton admitted to engaging in sexual conduct with the victim and taking sexually explicit pictures, prosecutors disclosed.

Law enforcement officers arrested Barton at John Glenn Columbus International Airport as he attempted to fly to Florida with the victim, federal authorities stated. Barton admitted to having sexual contact with the minor and taking explicit photographs before arriving at the airport, court documents show. At the time of the airport arrest, Barton had an outstanding Texas parole warrant from a prior 10-year sentence for online solicitation of a minor.

The investigation involved the FBI Cincinnati Division, the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, the Newark Police Department, and the John Glenn Columbus International Airport Police, according to case records. Federal authorities announced the sentencing in coordination with FBI Cincinnati, Coshocton County Sheriff Christopher Walters, Newark Police Chief Erik McKee, and Airport Police Chief Ronald Gray, alongside Assistant U.S. Attorneys Emily Czerniejewski and Jennifer M. Rausch.

Federal authorities noted that the prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative focused on identifying and prosecuting child exploitation offenses.
