Overweight Semis Cited in Fatal State Route 736 Forklift Crash

A 24-year-old worker died Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Darby Township after a collision during material delivery on the rural two-lane corridor.

A 24-year-old forklift operator died after being struck by a commercial semi-truck while unloading building materials along State Route 736 in Darby Township on Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office. State highway enforcement troopers subsequently inspected the commercial vehicles involved in the collision and cited both moving semi-truck drivers after determining that both rigs significantly exceeded permitted highway weight limits.

Collision Sequence on Route 736

Darby Township emergency crews and sheriff's deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:02 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to the 10000 block of State Route 736 near Adams Road after a 911 caller reported that a commercial semi-truck had struck a forklift in the roadway.

According to preliminary sheriff's findings, a stationary semi-truck and trailer was parked in the southbound lane in front of a rural residence to deliver cargo. The 24-year-old worker was actively operating a forklift to remove building materials from the parked trailer when a northbound 2013 Peterbilt semi-truck struck the forklift in the traveled roadway.

The impact forced the Peterbilt off the east side of the two-lane roadway, where it came to rest in a residential yard. The forklift spun around from the impact and came to rest in the northbound lane, ejecting the operator into a roadside ditch. After emergency responders began stabilizing the scene, a second northbound commercial vehicle, a 2018 Kenworth semi-truck, subsequently struck the disabled forklift before coming to a stop just north of the crash site.

Pleasant Valley Fire District emergency medical personnel treated the operator at the scene and transported him to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, where medical staff pronounced him dead. Authorities noted that the operator's name is being withheld pending official confirmation and formal family notification.

Commercial Weight Citations

An Ohio State Highway Patrol commercial enforcement trooper responded to assist sheriff's deputies with the investigation and inspected the cargo loads of both moving tractor-trailers. The trooper concluded that both vehicles exceeded legally permitted roadway weights established for that section of State Route 736.

According to investigative findings, the 2013 Peterbilt was operating 5,500 pounds overweight. The 2018 Kenworth exceeded the corridor's legal weight threshold by 6,100 pounds. The commercial enforcement trooper issued formal traffic citations to both truck drivers for the weight violations.

Corridor Context and Parallel Inquiries

State Route 736 serves as a primary two-lane rural connector through Darby Township, linking southern Union County communities between Plain City and Marysville. Initial regional television coverage on Wednesday, Oct. 7, generated confusion after preliminary broadcast reports suggested the incident took place Wednesday. Official sheriff's documentation and local news disclosures released on Thursday, Oct. 8, clarified that the fatal collision occurred Tuesday morning.

The fatal crash remains under active investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office. Because the incident involved commercial freight operations and delivery work along an active highway, federal workplace safety officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are conducting an inquiry alongside local authorities.

Multiple emergency services and state agencies assisted at the scene and during the subsequent road closure, including the Darby Township Public Safety Officer, Union County sheriff's deputies, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Marysville Division of Fire, and the Pleasant Valley Fire District.
