One person is dead and another is injured after an accidental shooting early Sunday morning at a motel in north Columbus.
Columbus Division of Police officers were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, to the Double Ten Hotel in the 6000 block of Zumstein Drive following reports of gunfire, NBC4 reported. Emergency responders transported two people to area hospitals, where one of the victims died, according to the station.
Initial findings from law enforcement indicate that the shooting occurred by accident. A Columbus police sergeant at the scene told 10TV that a man accidentally shot himself and the bullet then hit a second victim nearby.
Authorities have not publicly identified either of the two people involved in the incident. Columbus police have not disclosed whether the deceased victim was the man handling the weapon or the bystander struck by the bullet, and officials have not released an updated condition for the surviving victim receiving hospital care.
Investigators have also not announced whether any criminal charges will be filed in connection with the gunfire. The Columbus Division of Police continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
