American Electric Power announces $100 billion capital plan through 2031

The Columbus-based utility reported third-quarter earnings and allocated capital across transmission, generation and distribution.

Columbus-based American Electric Power reported third-quarter 2026 earnings and announced an expanded $100 billion five-year capital plan through 2031 on Oct. 28, 2026. The utility reported third-quarter GAAP earnings of $1,187 million, or $2.18 per share, compared with $972 million in the third quarter of 2025.

Under the capital plan, the utility allocated approximately $37 billion to transmission, $36 billion to generation and $22 billion to distribution, according to the company announcement. AEP stated that incremental contracted load is expected to grow to 84 gigawatts by 2031, citing 15 gigawatts of new load commitments signed during the third quarter. The company noted that new manufacturers, hyperscalers and other large customers help spread fixed system costs across a broader customer base.

AEP projected that fully executed take-or-pay electric service agreements will generate up to $21 billion in fixed-cost offsets for existing residential customers over the life of the contracts. AEP's announcement did not state jurisdiction-specific capital spending totals.

Previously, Pique reported on Oct. 14, 2026, that the utility planned a Wyoming fuel cell project, and on Oct. 19, 2026, that partners planned an Indiana nuclear feasibility study.
