Lyle Odelein, Inaugural Columbus Blue Jackets Captain, Dies at 58

The Stanley Cup champion defenseman led Columbus in its expansion era and was honored Saturday at Nationwide Arena.

Lyle Odelein, the inaugural captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets who played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League, died Friday, Oct. 2, in the Pittsburgh area at age 58 canadiens-quote. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Odelein died of an apparent heart attack post-gazette.

The Blue Jackets honored Odelein on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a pregame moment of silence and tribute at Nationwide Arena before hosting the Utah Mammoth nhl-tribute. During the ceremony, the team commemorated his foundational role in establishing NHL hockey in Columbus pa-tribute.

"Lyle is a significant part of our history, serving as our first captain and helping us celebrate our 25th anniversary season last March," the arena public address announcer said during the tribute pa-quote. "He left an indelible mark in our organization and our community."

Inaugural Columbus Captain

The Blue Jackets selected Odelein from the Phoenix Coyotes in the June 23, 2000, NHL Expansion Draft expansion-draft. Team management named the veteran defenseman the first captain in franchise history, giving the expansion roster an experienced, physical leader on the blue line cbj-captaincy.

Odelein captained Columbus through its inaugural 2000-01 season and into 2001-02, helping introduce NHL hockey to central Ohio before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on March 19, 2002 blackhawks-trade.

A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the seventh round of the 1986 NHL Draft montreal-draft. He made his Montreal debut during the 1989-90 season and went on to spend six full seasons with the Canadiens, establishing a reputation as an uncompromising defender montreal-tenure. During his Montreal tenure, he amassed 1,357 penalty minutes, which ranks second in Canadiens franchise history penalties-rank.

Odelein earned his greatest team triumph in 1993, helping lead Montreal to the Stanley Cup championship stanley-cup. Over five playoff runs with the Canadiens, he skated in 52 postseason games playoff-games.

Across a 16-season NHL career that spanned 1989 to 2006, Odelein played 1,056 regular-season games for Montreal, the New Jersey Devils, Phoenix, Columbus, Chicago, the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins career-stats. He recorded 252 career points on 50 goals and 202 assists while compiling 2,316 penalty minutes, the 30th highest total in NHL history career-stats.

Following his retirement from hockey, Odelein survived critical health challenges. In Pittsburgh on April 4, 2018, he underwent a marathon surgical procedure that included the replacement of his heart's aortic valve and simultaneous liver and kidney transplants health-battle.
