American Electric Power forms infrastructure unit to serve data centers and large loads
Columbus-based utility names commercial executive Greg Hall to lead the division as electricity demand surges.
Columbus-based American Electric Power announced Tuesday, Nov. 3, the formation of AEP Infrastructure, a new business unit designed to invest in, construct and operate energy resources to meet growing electricity demand. According to the company's announcement, the unit brings together competitive generation, infrastructure development, and retail and wholesale energy capabilities to provide energy solutions as electricity demand accelerates, driven by large-load customers and economic development.
The company named Greg Hall president of the organization, reporting to Bill Fehrman, AEP's chairman, president and chief executive officer. According to Hall's corporate biography, he joined AEP as a research associate in 1997 and served as executive vice president and chief commercial officer, having also helped establish wholesale and retail subsidiaries AEP Energy Partners in 2006 and AEP Energy in 2010. In his new role, the company said, Hall will continue to oversee prospective asset acquisitions and regulated commercial operations for AEP's operating utilities.
AEP Infrastructure brings together subsidiaries AEP Energy and AEP Energy Partners, which provide energy solutions to data center and wholesale customers as well as commercial and industrial users. AEP Infrastructure will also develop potential opportunities for customer-owned transmission and distribution facilities.
The organization will evaluate prospective generation acquisitions to strengthen AEP's competitive portfolio and develop new generation backed by long-term customer contracts. According to the utility, those generation opportunities include the proposed acquisition of the Longview Power Plant and a 20-year agreement to develop a fuel cell facility for Google in Wyoming. The company did not disclose staffing counts or financial segment reporting details for the new business unit in Tuesday's release.
The corporate realignment comes as surging electricity demand from technology facilities reshapes utility planning across central Ohio and AEP's 11-state system. Fehrman said in a statement that the new organization positions the company to address "once-in-a-generation load growth" while supporting its broader capital program, which calls for investing $100 billion from 2027 through 2031.
Previously, Pique reported on American Electric Power's $100 billion capital plan on Oct. 28, 2026, and plans for a $4 billion Wyoming fuel cell project on Oct. 14, 2026.
