Columbus City Council scheduled to consider endorsing global Plant Based Treaty

Sponsored by Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche, the resolution encourages plant-based food consumption to combat the climate crisis.

Columbus City Council is scheduled to hold Regular Meeting No. 47 on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, where the docket includes a proposal to formally endorse the Plant Based Treaty.

Sponsored by Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche, the measure encourages plant-based food consumption as a meaningful strategy to combat the ongoing climate crisis. Columbus City Council published its meeting agenda on Thursday, Oct. 22. On the agenda, the measure appears as Resolution 0250X-2026 under Resolutions of Expression. The legislative identifier allows members of the public to track the measure on the city docket and register to testify during council proceedings.

Under municipal council procedure, a resolution of expression serves as a formal declaration of legislative sentiment and policy advocacy rather than a binding city ordinance. The measure does not enact regulatory codes, business mandates, or dietary restrictions for Columbus residents or local establishments.

Supporters align the resolution with the city's broader environmental objectives and greenhouse gas reduction targets. Under the Columbus Climate Action Plan, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther reaffirmed the city's commitment to reducing community emissions by 45% and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Food policy and organic materials management have formed an active component of those municipal sustainability goals. Under its sustainability initiatives, Columbus has created nine food scrap drop-off locations for composting and opened two Waste and Reuse Convenience Centers.

Campaign organizers are urging cities and national governments to negotiate an international Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement. The proposed treaty aims to halt critical ecosystem degradation caused by animal agriculture, promote sustainable plant-based diets, and reverse biodiversity loss.

Campaign organizers structure the proposal around three core principles: relinquishing land expansion and deforestation for animal agriculture, redirecting agricultural policies toward plant-centered production, and restoring degraded landscapes and native forests. Across the globe, 78 cities, towns and subnational governments across six continents have endorsed the call for a global Plant Based Treaty.

In the United States, Somerville, Massachusetts, became the seventh U.S. city to support the initiative, following endorsements by Cambridge, Massachusetts; Culver City, California; West Hollywood, California; Hoboken, New Jersey; Los Angeles, California; and Boynton Beach, Florida. Following its endorsement, Somerville agreed to promote a plant-based restaurant week and educational material, and encourage plant-based food at city events.

If Columbus City Council adopts Resolution 0250X-2026 on Monday, Columbus would become the eighth municipality in the United States, and the first in Ohio and the Midwest, to endorse the pact.
