Columbus City Council adopts endorsement of global Plant Based Treaty
The ceremonial resolution urges low-carbon food policies in the city's climate plan and promotes local vegan dining without placing mandates on residents or businesses.
Columbus City Council has adopted legislation to formally endorse the Plant Based Treaty and encourage the consumption of plant-based food as a strategy to combat the ongoing climate crisis.
Council records from Regular Meeting No. 47 on Monday, Oct. 26, show Resolution 0250X-2026 endorsing the treaty was adopted.
The measure establishes Columbus as the first city in Ohio and the Midwest to endorse the international initiative.
The legislation aligns the endorsement with the Columbus Climate Action Plan, which sets community targets of achieving a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
Under the resolution, council members encourage the Sustainable Columbus office to incorporate diet-related food policies into the Columbus Climate Action Plan and educate the public on the environmental benefits of plant-based diets.
The legislation also urges municipal departments to adopt plant-based purchasing practices for city events and use municipal communications channels to promote plant-based eating and drinking across the city.
In addition, council members called on the city to promote “Columbus Vegan Dining Week” as an annual celebration highlighting local restaurants that offer vegan options.
Beyond municipal operations, the council urged neighboring central Ohio communities and the region's state and federal congressional delegation to endorse the initiative.
As a resolution of expression, the action serves as policy advocacy rather than a binding municipal ordinance, and carries no mandates or restrictions for Columbus residents or local businesses.
Previously, Pique reported on Oct. 23 that Columbus City Council was scheduled to consider endorsing the treaty.
